CEREC Same-Day Crowns vs. Traditional Crowns: Which is Right For You?

Do you need a dental crown? These days, CEREC crowns use same-day technology to deliver restorations faster than ever. But when is a traditional crown made at a dental lab better? Today, we'll compare the two options to help you choose the best treatment for your needs.

How Traditional Crowns Work

A traditional dental crown requires two visits to our office and around two to three weeks to complete.

During the first visit, our dentists prepare your tooth for restoration, take impressions, and create a temporary crown for you to wear while the dental lab makes your final restoration. The dental lab typically takes two to three weeks to make your final crown.

At your second visit, our dentists permanently place your new crown and ensure that your bite is comfortable and functioning properly.

How CEREC Same-Day Crowns Work

CEREC same-day crowns in Sweetwater deliver a durable porcelain restoration in a single appointment at our dental office.

With CEREC technology, our dentists scan a 3D image of your compromised tooth and use that image to design your new crown. They send their specifications to an in-office milling machine, which fabricates your new tooth from high-quality porcelain, while you wait. Then, they permanently place your new restoration and make any necessary adjustments once it's complete.

Comparing the Two

While CEREC same-day crowns provide several benefits like quick turnaround and no messy temporaries or impressions needed, there are still some cases when our dentists may recommend a traditional crown, such as:

  • For back molars that require stronger materials
  • For complex aesthetics, like front teeth
  • For material preferences like gold or other metal-based crowns

Our dentists can help you determine the best materials and treatment for your unique needs. We personalize dental care at Moore Smiles. Contact our team to schedule an evaluation with one of our dentists.
